I'm glad that the film got a US release, even if it's just a limited one.

My DVD came today, so I'll settle for watching it on my TV.

Dark River Interviews with Cast with English subtitles

Ruth Wilson
Quote
  Shaun was great I

mean the poor guy had a he's got a hard

job he's got to come on he's got to be

you know a pretty nasty character and

manipulative character and it's not an

easy job for an actor to come on and do

that and for all the characters opposite

him to have to be scared or frightened

of him or dislike him so I had much

respect for him because he did it in

such a gentle and brilliant way actually

and dealt with Esme in a wonderful way

Sean Bean
Quote
I my agent called me and told me that

Clio was you know making this film this

was about a year and a half of I suppose

so

I always kind of involved with it I

think for a while before it kind of

materialized and I was very excited

about the prospect of working with Clio

kind of makes you feel

really is quite shocking quite

disturbing the same size quite beautiful

sorry you know terms of these young

people and how they kind of get through

this obstacle course of emotions and and

he didn't feelings and you know things

that we you know that they have to face

up to which they don't necessarily want

so I think that's what it's kind of a

bow

he is the father except for the father

he is incestuous and he kinda leaves her

with a an awful burden you know on the

mind and the soul you know I think

something she's got to live with and you

know quite a shocking kind of man in

that sense yeah

yeah we talked about but I thought to

climb about it and be tougher there's

some length you know about what she saw

it what her vision was of this

particular character and then I'm a lady

always kind of forensic psychologist who

kind of specializes in like child abuse

and incestuous relationships within

families you know especially fathers and

daughters to me and that was you know

very interesting very kind of useful for

me

why the way that she visualizes things

and the camera lenses and she referred

over the cameraman Maggio I know and

he's you know together they're wonderful

pairing very artistic very kind of

visionary you know it's very enjoyable

to work with someone and gives you that

kind of look shave being able to try

things and you know that she was

thinking the same thing is very

experimental that she certainly got you

know efficient and and you know

structure and even though she sticks to

that she's you feel very confident with

her and I think she's very confident in

herself that she can you know veer away

from that and try different you know

experimenting with different you know

avenues

most of the stuff I do with Esme's the

things that happened at the time so

therefore we kind of film a film with

this made the young galleys and then I

do the same scene with with Ruth the

older Allison and I guess Chloe is gonna

mix them up and use them as she you know

she sees fit but that's that's career

you know it to be able to do that and

you know it amazes phase it's very

interesting to kind of work that way and

working on an independent firm is more

intimate and more times given to the

performances and the preparation they're

zombies distractions you know it's quite

a closed environment where you feel as

though it's very focused and intense and

there's not much else to worry about

except your relationship with the actor

or director of people that you were at

the time so it's very kind of gratifying

and very you know rewarding

very interesting cinema

experience and something that subjects

and this story this big approached

having very new and exciting they brave

kind of way

I've been meaning to write for some time now that I did eventually watch my Dark River DVD, with considerable help from its subtitles. Although the starring actors gave very strong performances, I would certainly have liked to see more from Sean. The film is artistically done and presents an intriguing psychological study of how the past can infuse the present, but it is not easy to sit through since both the past and the present are so thoroughly depressing. The strikingly beautiful shots of the countryside almost made up for that, but I may need to watch All Creatures Great and Small soon just to balance out the bleakness with a cheery "ponies and puppies" view of life in rural Yorkshire.
