Sean Bean and Stephen Graham to star in new Jimmy McGovern drama Time for BBC One

Quote
Sean Bean (Broken, Game Of Thrones) and Stephen Graham (Line Of Duty, The Virtues) will reunite to lead a gripping new prison drama from Jimmy McGovern for BBC One. Time is a three-part series and will be produced by BBC Studios Production. It begins filming in Liverpool this autumn.
Seen through the eyes of two very different men, Time is a visceral and high-stakes portrayal of life in the modern British penal system. It is a story of guilt and forgiveness, punishment and penitence and the impact that prison has on all those who pass through it. Time is emotional and thrilling, showcasing the performances of two of Britain’s finest and best-loved actors.

Sean Bean takes on the role of Mark Hebden, a teacher, husband and father, who killed an innocent man in an accident. Consumed by guilt, he accepts and even welcomes his four-year sentence. Separated from his family, he has no idea what to expect in this unforgiving new environment and needs to learn quickly how to survive.

Stephen Graham is Eric Reid, a prison officer. Caring and honest, Eric tries his very best to protect those in his charge, something which is a daily challenge in this understaffed and high-tension world. When one of the most dangerous inmates identifies his weakness, Eric faces an impossible choice between his principles and his love for his family.

Both Eric and Mark, officer and inmate, are seemingly trapped by their pasts and unsure of their futures. Each has to not only survive, but to find the strength and the way to move forward.

Writer Jimmy McGovern says: “The BBC have given me a brilliant young director and two of the greatest actors on the planet. I am overjoyed.”

Sean Bean says: “Getting to be involved in a Jimmy McGovern drama again is a real privilege and it will be great to be reunited with Stephen. Mark Hebden is another of Jimmy’s complex and superbly written characters and I am looking forward to bringing him to life on screen.”

Stephen Graham says: “It is an absolute honour to be working with Jimmy again, I’m feeling blessed. I’m excited to be working with Lewis as I have heard so many incredible things about him as a director, I can’t wait to get stuck in. Of course, I am made up to be back on set with Sean.”

Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama, says: “Jimmy has a unique style of creating thought-provoking dramas which tell raw and emotional stories, and Time is exactly that. With Sean and Stephen in lead roles, Jimmy and Lewis behind the camera, Time is a shining example of British drama talent at its best.”

Tom Sherry, Executive Producer and Head of BBC Studios Drama North and Scotland, says: “It’s a joy to be working with Jimmy again. He writes unforgettable characters who live on in your mind long after you have seen them. Time will show you a world within a world and leave you questioning, what would you do?”

Time was commissioned by Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama and Charlotte Moore, Chief Content Officer. It will be directed by Lewis Arnold and executive produced by Tom Sherry and Michael Parke for BBC Studios and Lucy Richer for the BBC. It will be produced by Simon Maloney. It is being distributed internationally by BBC Studios.

Details of film and TV COVID insurance scheme published
Quote
The government has now released draft proposals for its Film and TV Production Restart Scheme.

The government backed Ł500m scheme was announced back in July and is aimed at helping film and TV shows struggling to get insurance for Covid-related costs get back into production. It came about after industry lobbying.

Proposals state that to be eligible, productions must be spending at least 50% of their budget in the UK. Excluded productions include live news and current affairs, live sports and events coverage, theatre productions that are being filmed and all commercials and corporate productions.

Productions will also need to meet various ‘social commitments’ such as not using unpaid runners and paying National Living Wage. Productions will also have to comply with commitments around diversity.

The scheme still has to get State Aid approval from the European Commission before it can officially go ahead.

DCMS have appointed Marsh Commercial as the Third Party Administrator for the Scheme.

The registration deadline for the scheme is 31 December 2020, and claims will be able to be submitted up to 30 November 2021 for losses incurred up until 30 June 2021.

New BBC crime drama series starring Sean Bean and Stephen Graham being filmed at Shrewsbury Prison
Quote
Time is the new prison-drama series starring Sean Bean and Stephen Graham - and it's being filmed at Shrewsbury prison until Friday 20 November.

The three-part series was only announced by the BBC and acclaimed writer Jimmy McGovern in September. The series will be directed by Broadchurch’s Lewis Arnold. McGovern said: “The BBC have given me a brilliant young director and two of the greatest actors on the planet. I am overjoyed.”

It was anticipated they would film in Liverpool this autumn, but Shrewsbury Prison has now become the location of choice. Crime-drama fans should expect Time to arrive on screens towards the end of the year or early 2021.

The drama is one of several dramas that are underway around the UK. The fourth series of Top Boy 4 has just begun shooting in and around London, as has Jimmy McGovern’s prison drama Time, starring Stephen Graham and Sean Bean, currently in production in Liverpool and Shrewsbury.

Filming underway at Shrewsbury's former prison could be a major BBC drama
Quote
A production crew has moved into Shrewsbury's Dana prison - which has shut its doors until midway through November.

While neither the BBC nor those behind the company that runs the former prison and a visitor attraction will confirm it, it is believed that the crew is there for the new drama, Time. It had been due to be filmed in Liverpool but the city is now under the tight lockdown restrictions.

Joel Campbell from the prison company said: "All we can say is that the prison is closed to the public and there is a production taking place."

The prison drama from Jimmy McGovern is a three-part series.

Seen through the eyes of two very different men, Time is a visceral and high-stakes portrayal of life in the modern British penal system. It is a story of guilt and forgiveness, punishment and penitence and the impact that prison has on all those who pass through it.

BBC tight-lipped about new show being filmed at Shrewsbury's former prison
Two of Britain's top TV and film stars are believed to be filming a tough new drama in the county.
Quote
A production crew has been at Shrewsbury's Dana prison for several weeks and the venue has now shut its doors to the public until November.

The Dana did initially stay open, with sections of the prison closed off to the public, but it is now completely closed aside from on weekends.

Neither the BBC, nor those behind the company that runs the prison tours, would confirm what production is being filmed but the crew is believed to be there for a new drama called Time.

The show had been due to be filmed in Liverpool but the city is now under the tight lockdown restrictions.

The former guards that show visitors around the Victorian building have also been tight-lipped about what series is being filmed.

First look image released of Sean Bean and Stephen Graham in Jimmy McGovern’s Time for BBC One

Quote
A first look image has been released today of Sean Bean as prisoner Mark Cobden and Stephen Graham as prison officer Eric McNally in BBC One’s major new drama Time, written by Jimmy McGovern and made by BBC Studios Production.

Joining Sean and Stephen in the cast are Siobhan Finneran (Happy Valley, The Other One), Sue Johnston (The Royle Family, Downton Abbey), Hannah Walters (This is England, Pirates of the Caribbean), David Calder (The World Is Not Enough, The Hatton Garden Job) Nadine Marshall (Small Axe, Sitting in Limbo), Michael Socha (This is England, Being Human) and Aneurin Barnard (Dunkirk, Thirteen).

Currently filming in and around Liverpool, Time has secured funding and support from the Liverpool Film Office through the LCR Production Fund.

A visceral, emotional and high-stakes portrayal of life in a British prison; Mark Cobden (Sean Bean) is consumed by guilt after accidentally killing an innocent man. Accepting his four year sentence and separated from his family, he meets Eric McNally (Stephen Graham), a caring prison officer doing his best to protect those in his charge. However when one of the most dangerous inmates identifies his weakness, Eric faces an impossible choice; between his principles and his family.

A story of guilt and forgiveness, punishment and penitence, both Eric and Mark are trapped by their pasts and unsure of their futures. Will they find the strength to move forward?

Time was commissioned by Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama and Charlotte Moore, Chief Content Officer. It is directed by Lewis Arnold (Des, Humans) and executive produced by Tom Sherry and Michael Parke for BBC Studios Production and Lucy Richer for the BBC alongside Jimmy McGovern, Sean Bean and Stephen Graham. The producer is Simon Maloney (King Charles III, I May Destroy You) and the series is distributed internationally by BBC Studios.

Time on BBC release date: When will Sean Bean and Stephen Graham prison drama start?
TIME is a prison drama which is expected to leave viewers gripped. So when will the new Jimmy McGovern series begin on BBC One?

Quote
When will Time on BBC start?
Time was commissioned earlier this year by the BBC but filming hadn't been able to start until reasonably recently.

This is of course because of the pandemic, as the filming schedule had to be put back.

The cast and crew of Time are now currently filming in and around Liverpool for the three-part drama.

So as of writing this article, no release date has been revealed for Time.
