Saint Seiya is a manga series written and illustrated by Masami Kurumada. It was serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump between January 1986 and November 1990. The series enjoyed massive popularity throughout the 1980s, and many manga authors have cited Saint Seiya as an inspiration, including Bleach's Tite Kubo. Completed at 110 chapters collected into 28 volumes, the manga currently has over 50 million copies in circulation, and multiple anime adaptations have been created since its debut. The original Saint Seiya anime series won the 1987 Animage Anime Grand Prix prize. The seires has also spawned novels, films, musicals, and video games. In 2019, Netflix released a CG animated series, which rebooted the franchise. Saint Seiya follows an orphan named Seiya on his journey to become a warrior for the goddess Athena. After being forced to travel to Athena's sanctuary, where he obtains the Pegasus Bronze Cloth worn by warriors of Athena, Seiya learns that his sister has disappeared. If Seiya can win the Galaxian Wars tournament for the ultra-powerful Sagittarius Gold Cloth, the reincarnation of Athena will help Seiya find his sister. Despite its sci-fi setting, the series is loosely based off Greek mythology, with gods such as Athena, Poseidon, and Hades engaging in intergalactic battles of epic proportions.
Saint Seiya, also known as Knights of the Zodiac, is an anime franchise that's both classic and somewhat obscure. Its decades-long history, however, makes jumping in at the beginning something of a challenge. In preparation for the live-action film, here are all of the Saint Seiya manga and anime and how and where to get into them.
