The Yellow Tie
« on: June 06, 2023, 08:57:31 AM »
Sean Bean, Miranda Richardson Join Composer Biopic ‘The Yellow Tie’ (EXCLUSIVE)
Quote
Sean Bean and Miranda Richardson are set to star alongside John Malkovich in the biopic of Romanian composer Sergiu Celibidache, Variety can reveal.

Also joining the cast is Ben Schnetzer (“The Book Thief”), who has replaced Rupert Friend after scheduling difficulties meant Friend had to drop out of the project. Schnetzer will play a young version of Celebidachi while Malkovich will play the composer later in life.

They will be joined by Kate Phillips (“Downton Abbey”), Anton Lesser (“Game of Thrones”) and Charlie Rowe (“Rocketman”).

“The Yellow Tie” tells the story of controversial classical conductor Sergiu Celibidache, one of Romania’s best known classical music artists. He battled homelessness and prejudice before becoming the youngest ever conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.

Celibidache’s son, Serge Ioan Celebidachi, will direct from a screenplay he co-wrote with James Olivier.

Also joining the project are cinematographer Peter Menzies Jr. (“A Time to Kill”), costume designer Alessandro Lai (“Django”), hair and makeup designer Lynda Armstrong (“101 Dalmatians”) and production designer Vlad Vieru (“Django”). Kathryn Kluge and Kim Allen Kluge (“Silence”) have composed an original score to accompany the pic while Des Hamilton and Georgia Topley (“Jojo Rabbit”) are overseeing casting.

Adela Vrinceanu Celebidachi, Cristina Dobritoiu, Andrei Boncea, Christopher Milburn and James Olivier are producing with Robert W. Cort (“Mr. Holland’s Opus”) as executive producer.

“The Yellow Tie” is set to start shooting in in Bucharest, Romania later this month.

The film is the latest in a series of composer-inspired biopics, including Todd Field’s fictional “Tar,” starring Cate Blanchett, which came out last year, while “Maestro,” which features Bradley Cooper as Leonard Bernstein, is due to drop on Netflix later this year.

Sean Bean is taking on the role of composer Sergiu Celibidache's father.
Quote
Sergiu Celibidache was born on 28 June 1912 to Demostene Celebidachi, a cavalry officer of the Romanian army and later prefect of the Iași region and Maria Celebidachi (née Brăteanu), in Roman, a small city in the Moldavia region of Romania, where his father was a government official

Sean Bean & Miranda Richardson to Star in 'The Yellow Tie'
Quote
Biopics of musicians have been major Oscar contenders over the last few years. From Renee Zellweger as Judy Garland in Judy to Rami Malik as Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, these have been the type of movies that straddle the line between popular fare that have done well in theaters (at least pre-pandemic) and Oscar glory. In 2022, Cate Blanchett also got nominations for playing the fictional classical maestro, Lydia Tar. Now we have a new film holding for awards attention, The Yellow Tie, a movie about real-life classical conductor/composer Sergiu Celibidache, and unsurprisingly, it comes with an all-star cast.

Though the film technically is led by American actor John Malkovich (The ABC Murders) and Ben Schnetzer (Y: The Last Man), who replaces the originally cast Rupert Friend) as Celibidache in his older and younger years, the rest of the cast is a who's who of PBS favorites. Sean Bean (World on Fire) will lead the cast and play Demostene Celibidache, the musician's father who wanted him to have a political career. Miranda Richardson (Good Omens) and Kate Phillips (Miss Scarlet & The Duke) play Ioana Celibidache at older and younger ages, the woman who becomes Sergiu's wife in the late 1960s.

Regarded as one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century, Sergiu Celibidache was not only a conductor and composer but musical theorist and teacher. Due to the shortage of de-Nazified conductors post World War II, he was appointed the principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic. He was also anti-recording, refusing to allow most of his performances to be released during his lifetime, insisting that the only way to experience it properly was live. During his tenure at the Munich Philharmonic, he also spent his later years accused of open sexism and discrimination against women.

Other cast listed for the project include Anton Lesser (Endeavour), Edward Hogg (Luther: The Fallen Son), Julian Firth (The Sister Boniface Mysteries), Brendan Howley (Ten Percent), Ewan Horrocks (Dominia),  and Charlie Rowe (Rocketman). Serge Ioan Celebidachi (the conductor's son) will helm the project from a script he co-wrote with James Olivier (Octav). Kathryn Kluge and Kim Allen Kluge (Silence) will compose an original score for the film.

The Yellow Tie is set to start filming in Romania in June 2023 and expected to debut in 2024

Sean Bean, interview for PRO TV News. The actor is filming in Romania for the film "The Yellow Tie"
He won an Emmy Award for Best Actor, two Bafta Awards, out of 3 nominations also for leading roles, and countless other accolades for his performance.

Quote
However, the whole planet recognizes actor Sean Bean for his roles in "The Lord of the Rings Trilogy" or "Game of Thrones". The British actor is filming these days in Romania for "The Yellow Tie", a film about the life of conductor Sergiu Celibidache, in which he plays his father in a complicated father-son relationship.

Sean Bean: "Game of Thrones, like Lord of the Rings, became such an international phenomenon, we didn't even realize it at the time of filming, we were in New Zealand, we knew they were big movies, but we didn't realize they were going to catch on with so many people all over the world, we made a lot of money. Which is good."

Sean Bean is shooting these days in Romania for the feature film Yellow Tie. It will be Demosthenes, father of the famous conductor Sergiu Celibidache.

Amalia Enache: You play a Romanian with Greek origins, was it necessary to have a bigger nose?"

Sean Bean: "Oh, I already have a big one, I brought it with me."

Amalia Enache: Is Demosthenes a positive or negative character, considering that his son completely separated from him when he turned 18?

Sean Bean: "I think in those days, 1922 to 1970, in most countries and especially someone in the military was very strict with children. Children were not seen as they are now, they were considered as beings to be trained, taught, prepared to pursue an important career. Demosthenes wanted his son to follow in his footsteps and so tolerates him playing the piano, studying music a little, but expects more from him, to become a politician, even prime minister of Romania."

Amalia Enache: What was the biggest challenge in this role?

Sean Bean: "The very strange thing is that I like to play the piano, Bach, Mozart, many of classical music and, in fact, in this film I am very anti-music, I close the piano over Sergiu's fingers. Yes, during filming I am fascinated by how the music sounds, and I have to say: Quiet! Stop playing the piano, I'll slap his hands, close the piano, it's weird to play a character who's the opposite of you."

Amalia Enache: Will you have time and plans to visit something in Romania?

Sean Bean: "I don't have much time, I arrived here and started shooting immediately, but we would like, like everyone, to get to Transylvania, to see the castles, but it's quite a long and difficult road. It's a beautiful country and in Bucharest there are so many things to admire, the old buildings, it's interesting to see the buildings from the last century and then, right next door, those from the communist period."

The tough guy in the movies, who is said to most often die before the movie is over, is in real life not only a music lover, but also an avid gardener.

Sean Bean: "I have a lot of roses in my garden, I like their smell, I have 150 roses and I go among them to cut the dried parts, but I also have flowers that my mom and dad had in their garden, or my grandfather, old-fashioned plants."

SAG-AFTRA Waivers Allow Some Productions to Continue to Shoot in CEE
Quote
BUDAPEST: Three feature films received waivers from Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG - AFTRA) for shooting in CEE. Their shooting is taking place in Hungary and Romania.

These productions are A24’s Death of a Unicorn directed by Alex Scharfman and starring Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega, shooting in Budapest, Bryan Fuller's Dust Bunny starring Mads Mikkelsen and Sigourney Weaver, which is also shooting in Budapest, and Romanian/British coproduction The Yellow Tie by Serge Ioan Celebidachi, starring Ben Schnetzer, John Malkovich, Miranda Richardson and Sean Bean, which is currently shooting in Bucharest. The Yellow Tie is a coproduction between Romania’s Oblique Media Film and Celi Films (UK).

The list released by SAG - AFTRA on 18 July 2023 includes “productions that are signed to agreements within the scope of the strike order, but have signed Interim Agreements allowing them to resume. Members may work on these productions without being in violation of the strike order”.

The SAG - AFTRA strike, which has shut down productions globally, has had a major impact across the CEE region where servicing Hollywood productions is a big business.

SAG-AFTRA Strike: Which Movies and TV Shows Are Still in Production
Quote
Not every TV and film production will stop amid dual strikes by SAG-AFTRA and the Writers Guild of America. A host of projects stopped work after writers went on strike against media companies for better pay, streaming data transparency and protections against artificial intelligence (among other issues), and many more have paused since actors walked out on July 14.

There are exceptions, however. SAG-AFTRA’s strike rules allow for work on productions covered under different agreements, and the union can grant waivers or sign interim agreements with independent productions. Below is a list of TV shows and films that fall under those designations; this story will be updated as more productions earn waivers.

Quote
The producers and director of The Yellow Tie have announced the end of filming that took place this summer in locations in Bucharest and its surroundings.

Over 10,000 people attended the staging of historic concerts held by the renowned conductor in Philadelphia, Buenos Aires, Venice, Bucharest or Berlin. At Rhapsody Romanian, recreated on the stage of the Bucharest Athenaeum, were present, as spectators, some of those who sang on the same stage with maestro Sergiu Celibidache in 1978, when he returned briefly to the country.

The Yellow Tie will be released in fall 2024.
