Arthur Hughes and Sean Bean to lead Disney Plus Tudor mystery Shardlake
The new four part series is currently filming, and will be based on the popular Tudor murder mystery novels by CJ Sansom.

It has been announced, RadioTimes.com can exclusively reveal, that Disney Plus is in production on a new drama series starring Arthur Hughes (Then Barbara Met Alan) and Sean Bean (The Lord of the Rings), based on the popular Tudor murder mystery novels by CJ Sansom, Shardlake.

In the series, which has already started filming in Hungary, Austria and Romania, Hughes (seen in character above) will play Matthew Shardlake, a lawyer with an acute sense of justice and one of the few honest men in a world beset with scheming and plots.

Meanwhile, Bean will play Thomas Cromwell, Shardlake's employer and the dangerous and all-powerful right-hand man to Henry VIII. Shardlake has unwavering loyalty to Cromwell and the Crown, but as a person living with scoliosis during the Tudor period he is abused as a 'crookback' wherever he turns.
Other central cast members announced as joining the series include Anthony Boyle (Tetris) as Jack Barak, Babou Ceesay (Wolfe) as Abbot Fabian, Paul Kaye (Game of Thrones) as Brother Jerome, and Ruby Ashbourne Serkis (The Greatest Beer Run Ever) as Alice.

The official synopsis for the series says: "Drenched in mystery, suspense and deception, this four-part drama, based on the first novel in Sansom’s series, is an eerie whodunnit adventure, set in 16th century England during the dissolution of the monasteries.

"Shardlake’s sheltered life as a lawyer is turned upside down when Cromwell instructs him to investigate the murder of one of his commissioners at a monastery in the remote town of Scarnsea."
It continues: "The commissioner was gathering evidence to close the monastery and it is now imperative for Cromwell’s own political survival that Shardlake both solves the murder and closes the monastery. He leaves Shardlake in no doubt that failure is not an option.

"Cromwell insists that he is accompanied by cocky, good-looking Jack Barak and Shardlake is left unsure whether Barak is an assistant, or Cromwell’s spy. At Scarnsea, the duo are met with hostility, suspicion and paranoia by the monks who fear for their future and will seemingly stop at nothing to preserve their order."
The series has been adapted by The Last Kingdom writer Stephen Butchard, who said in a statement: "Writing Shardlake has been nothing short of a joy. CJ Sansom’s novels are incredibly rich in story, character and history; full of intrigue, excitement, cruelty and compassion – and at the centre of it all is Matthew Shardlake, a hero like no other.

"Although these stories are set in Tudor England, the themes absolutely engage and resonate with today’s world. Hundreds of years may have passed – but humankind and what makes us tick has changed little."

The cast for the series will also include Peter Firth as Norfolk, Matthew Steer as Goodhap, Brian Vernel as Brother Mortimus, Irfan Shamji as Brother Guy, David Pearse as Brother Edwig, Miles Barrow as Brother Gabriel, Mike Noble as Bugge, and Kimberley Nixon as Joan.

This is wonderful news!  I have read all the Shardlake books and they are terrific and gripping.  Can't wait to see Sean playing the wily Cromwell.

While this sounds like an awesome project, my excitement got slightly deflated reading Disney+, for a few reasons...
Disney, in my opinion, hasn't had the greatest quality output lately... Especially when it comes to television.
Also, being on a subscription service has destroyed the chances of an eventual blu ray release... I guess I am old fashioned that way, but I like to own my media, not just rent it.

Regardless, I am glad to see Sean Bean is still doing more projects! I hope this turns out well!

Kreuzenstein Castle: Setting for Disney+ Thriller

Historical crime series launches on Disney+ in 2024. Kreuzenstein Castle in Lower Austria was a highly secret filming location for four weeks.

NO. Under the alias "The Lawyer" and strict secrecy, filming of a new film series took place at Kreuzenstein Castle in February. On behalf of the streaming channel Disney+ and the production company All3Media, director Justin Chadwick recorded scenes for the historical series "Shardlake. It is scheduled to flicker across TV screens from 2024.

"Shardlake" is based on the series of historical crime novels by Scotsman Christopher John Samson. The story takes place in 16th century England during the reign of King Henry VIII. The series tells the story of hunchbacked lawyer Matthew Shardlake, portrayed by Arthur Hughes ("The Innocents," "Then Barbara Met Alan").

Shardlake works for Minister Thomas Cromwell, played by Sean Bean ("Time", "Game of Thrones"), right-hand man of King Henry VIII. "Shardlake" was also filmed in Hungary and Romania.

Shardlake trailer gives first look at Arthur Hughes, Sean Bean and Anthony Boyle

Disney Plus has released a first look trailer for new thrilling murder mystery, Shardlake.

Based on the best-selling novels by CJ Sansom, the four-part series centres around lawyer Matthew Shardlake, who has been tasked with investigating a murder at the instruction of Thomas Cromwell, accompanied by Jack Barak, his cocky assistant.

Set during the Tudor era, the cast includes Arthur Hughes (Help), Sean Bean (Game of Thrones) and Anthony Boyle (Masters of the Air), who have all been transformed into citizens of the Tudor period, as seen in the trailer below.

The eerie trailer shows Boyle and Hughes try their best at investigating the murder, but there are a fair share of obstacles in their path, including some romance.

"God knows who did it," flashes on the screen before the trailer comes to an end, suggesting a thrilling adventure on the horizon.

Sean Bean to star in new Disney+ show Shardlake - and it looks seriously good

Are you ready for your new favourite TV show? Disney+ has released a first look at Shardlake, a new drama starring Sean Bean alongside Harry Potter and the Cursed Child star Anthony Boyle, and Then Barbara Met Alan actor Arthur Hughes.

So what can we expect from the new series, the story follows Matthew Shardlake, “a lawyer with an acute sense of justice and one of the few honest men in a world beset with scheming and plots”.

The synopsis reads: “Shardlake works for Thomas Cromwell, played by Sean Bean the dangerous and all-powerful right-hand man to Henry VIII. Disney+ announced it was boarding the forthcoming adaptation of C.J. Sansom's Shardlake novels from All3Media's The Forge in January 2023. Set during the reign of Henry VIII in the 16th century, these historical mystery novels star a hunchbacked lawyer, Matthew Shardlake, whose first case is commissioned by Henry's chief minister, Thomas Cromwell. Though the series was filmed in 2022, it's been over a year since we've heard anything more, with Disney finally debuting the first trailer and entire cast.

Arthur Hughes (Ordeal by Innocence) plays Matthew Shardlake, one of the few honest lawyers in London with an acute sense of justice. Sean Bean (Time) plays Shardlake's boss, Thomas Cromwell, who fans of Wolf Hall know was the real-life, all-powerful right-hand man to Henry VIII. The trio of stars is rounded out by Anthony Boyle (Masters of the Air), the cocky and good-looking Jack Barak, who is technically Shardlake's assistant, though Shardlake isn't so sure if his loyalties are to him or Cromwell as a spy.



 At this point, Shardlake is still being billed as a series that's coming to Disney+ across the board, but it should be noted that this is a Disney+ UK series, many of which wind up on Hulu in America since they tend to be PG-13 (or "not family-friendly enough for Disney"). With Hulu moving under the Disney+ banner in America, that will be less of a big deal, at least for those who subscribe to both. But for now, it's uncertain which banner the show winds up under for those who only subscribe to one or the other, and we'll be keeping an eye on that.

Shardlake does not yet have a release date but is expected out sometime in 2024.

Sean Bean does not have the lion’s share of screen time in Disney’s finely wrought four-part adaptation of CJ Sansom’s first Shardlake book, Dissolution, in which he plays Henry VIII’s fearsome minister Thomas Cromwell. But he looms over it with the kind of brooding power you would expect from the man who has played the Bond villain Alec Trevelyan, the wronged Game of Thrones nobleman Eddard Stark and The Lord of the Rings’s equally ill-fated warrior Boromir.

We think of monastic life as being spartan, but in the grand, candlelit refectory of the imposing St Donatus monastery, the tables are groaning with plates piled high with mouthwatering food and goblets of fine wine…

We’re on location for new Disney+ series Shardlake, a four-part murder mystery set in the reign of King Henry VIII and based on the first of C.J. Sansom’s acclaimed novels (see panel, below right).

Filming is taking place in Budapest, where the production team has re-created Tudor England during the Reformation, a bloody and turbulent time when Henry separated the Church of England from the Vatican, dissolving convents and monasteries and seizing their wealth for the Crown.

The story follows London lawyer Matthew Shardlake (Arthur Hughes), who is dispatched by the King’s chief adviser Thomas Cromwell (Sean Bean) to investigate the murder of a royal official at a monastery.

However, Shardlake – who is self-conscious about how scoliosis has affected his physical appearance and who is called cruel names such as ‘crookback’ because of it – does not receive the warmest of welcomes from taciturn Abbot Fabian (Babou Ceesay) and his unforthcoming monks.

Shardlake star teases "complex" mystery: "It’s quite twisty"
"Even when you think you've solved it, there's actually more and more and more."

New Disney Plus series Shardlake is a real mash-up of genres – based on the novels by CJ Sansom, it's part historical drama, part fictional murder mystery, with the titular lawyer, Matthew Shardlake, investigating a murder in Tudor England.

He is assigned to the case by Thomas Cromwell, after one of Cromwell's commissioners is killed while attempting to close a monastery. Shardlake is sent, along with Jack Barak, to both uncover the murderer, but also find reason to shut the monastery for good.

Arthur Hughes (Then Barbara Met Alan) stars in the series as the central character and, speaking at a recent Q&A, he revealed that viewers may have trouble if they're hoping to decipher just who the murderer is ahead of the big reveal.

 Asked whether he was able to guess the murderer himself, Hughes said: "I think, reading it, I didn't. Because there's so many dead ends, red herrings, and there's just there's a lot of information. There's really so many layers to the story – it's quite twisty."

He continued: "Shardlake and Jack are kind of exploring every avenue and it's kind of impenetrable for them to get through for a while. These monks are like an organised crime family.

"And that's down to how it's written and how Stephen has presented this front that they give.
"I couldn't guess, I think it's not just something you guess and it's done. It's quite a complex mystery, so even when you think you've solved it, there's actually more and more and more."

Alongside Hughes, the series also stars Sean Bean (Marriage) as Cromwell and Anthony Boyle (Manhunt) as Jack Barak, and this first season is based on the first of Sansom's books, Dissolution.
