Snowpiercer Season 4 - Review
Quote
Snowpiercer isn’t playing coy with the return of its main villain, the magnetic Joseph Wilford (Sean Bean), last seen accepting a long, drug-induced nap as punishment for his misdeeds. Wilford is the cockroach who survives the apocalypse, with a swaggering Bean relishing every retort he’s given in Season 4. Pure scenery chewing follows the character’s resurrection, and I would be disappointed by anything less from the narcissistic and sadistic inventor. Even when the series tips into over-the-top simplistic good-versus-evil declarations, Alex’s complex and evolving feelings toward the man who helped raise her adds a layer of nuance. It would also be easy to rely too much on Bean to dial up the drama, but Zbyszewski knows when and how much to play the Wilford hand.

The Verdict
Snowpiercer’s final season almost didn’t see the light of day, but thankfully, AMC saved the satisfying last outing from the Warner Bros. Discovery wastelands. There’s some disjointed storytelling early on, but once Season 4 finds its rhythm, it plays into the strengths of established relationships. Daveed Diggs, Alison Wright, and Mickey Sumner are standouts in a strong ensemble, and Sean Bean is having a blast as the captivatingly wicked Joseph Wilford. As the new villain, the Admiral, Clark Gregg isn’t given as much depth or range, and his thread doesn’t live up to the broader questions it poses. The stakes have never been higher, and from the jump, it feels like anyone and everyone could be killed off. While it can’t surpass the quality of Bong Joon-Ho’s 2013 movie version, it has been a hell of a ride.

Snowpiercer Season 4 Review — A Disjointed Final Season Spoil Good Performances
Quote
Snowpiercer says goodbye with a final season that is both heartbreaking and frustrating. Even with the bleak tone, the sci-fi series has a lot to like. The performances remain excellent, and the show’s ethical questions are worth exploring. However, some limitations on the production budget and writing prevent the final season from reaching its full potential.

Snowpiercer Season 4 Premiere Review: AMC's Final Season Hits the Skids
Quote
The Season 4 premiere, entitled "Snakes in the Garden," is slightly bogged down by all of that behind-the-scenes action. It takes a fair amount of time to re-establish the world and the massive cast of Snowpiercer, and as such, viewers have to wait for the real tension to ramp up. But when it happens, there's plenty to be excited about. The premiere on its own may not be memorable, yet it definitely sets the stage for a tense final 10 episodes.

While "Snakes in the Garden" on its own is a relatively slow-moving and by the numbers hour, it's still worth watching because what happens in the final act clearly lays out mysteries and exciting developments for the rest of Season 4. One character experiences a jaw-dropping change, and the last scene includes a reveal that will make TV viewers geek out in the best way. Those moments set up a story that's much more unique to these characters and this world. There aren't any huge hints about how the series is going to end, however, for those who like to speculate.

That being said, the reveal adds an immediate punch to the rest of the season and takes everything up a notch. That alone gives viewers a reason to come back, purely to see where that will go. But if that's not enough, the personal stakes for certain characters get raised abruptly, so there's also going to be that emotional draw. The premiere has a little something for those who like sci-fi mysteries, and a little something for those more invested in the stories of the survivors. The drawback is how late it all comes.

Snowpiercer Season 4, Episode 6 Review: The Battle for Survival Turns Ugly
Quote
When Snowpiercer reintroduced Joseph Wilford in Season 4, Episode 5, "The Engineer," the AMC series had a lot of explaining to do. Not only had Wilford been presumed dead by the audience, but the character's return muddled Season 4's entire story. Season 4, Episode 6, "Bell the Cat," acts as the writers explaining to viewers exactly what they were going for -- and detailing exactly where the rest of the season (and show) is going.

That exposition is both a positive and a negative for the fans. On one hand, "Bell the Cat" finally provides a lot of important information that the season has needed. On the other hand, it rarely stops feeling like an explainer. And when it does, it's because there's something either strange or unsettling -- or both -- going on. This is a significant episode as far as understanding the story, but its not one that viewers will need to watch again.

One of the biggest problems with Wilford's return was that it gave Snowpiercer fans two characters to hate. Was the villainous mastermind of the season still Admiral Anton Milius, head of the ironically named International Peacekeeping Forces? Or was the TV show revealing that once again, Wilford was going to be the Big Bad for Andre Layton and his friends to overcome? "Bell the Cat" provides a definitive answer to this question. The episode highlights that not only does Milius treat Wilford like a subordinate, but he does things that even Wilford finds uncomfortable, and the two wind up on clearly opposite sides.

At this point in the season, Snowpiercer has no choice but to start explaining itself. It does an awful lot of that in "Bell the Cat," in a variety of ways. Firstly, the opening minutes show how Wilford survived being put into in the track scaler at the end of Season 3, his being found by the Animal Squad, and how Milius recruited him as an ally. These relatively brief scenes bridge the gap between seasons.
