Sean Bean to Play Sheriff of Nottingham in ‘Robin Hood’ Series at MGM+
Quote
Sean Bean has joined the upcoming “Robin Hood” series at MGM+, Variety has learned.

Bean will star alongside previously announced series lead Jack Patten, who will play the titular outlaw folk hero. Bean will star as the notorious Sheriff of Nottingham.

The official description of the Sheriff states:

“This vision of the Sheriff of Nottingham is unique: a statesman, a strategist, and a builder of Nottingham itself. A loving father, a politician, and cousin to King Henry II. He navigates the dangerous tides of power, facing not only an outlaw in the woods but also the ambitions of Eleanor of Aquitaine and the Norman Barons that surround him. Cunning and pragmatic, he is a man who rules with an iron hand, not out of cruelty, but an unshakable belief that the law, as Normans see it, must be preserved.”

Bean is best known for his roles in films like “The Lord of the Rings,” “Troy,” “Goldeneye,” and “Ronin.” He also famously starred in the first season of “Game of Thrones” as Ned Stark and has also been in shows such as “Accused,” “Broken,” “Henry VIII,” and “Legends.”

He is repped by Independent Talent in the UK, Verve in the US, and Prosper PR.

“Robin Hood” was originally picked up at MGM+ back in September 2024 for 10 episodes. The logline for the show says, “Following the Norman invasion of England, Rob – a Saxon forester’s son – and Marian, the daughter of a Norman lord – fall in love and work together to fight for justice and freedom. As Rob rises as the leader of a band of rebel outlaws, Marian infiltrates the power at court, as both work together to thwart royal corruption and bring peace to the land.”

John Glenn and Jonathan English are writers and executive producers on the series. Glenn also serves as showrunner, while English is also directing. Todd Lieberman of Hidden Pictures executive produces, with Carly Elter and Nicole Bryant of Hidden Pictures overseeing the project for the company. Lionsgate Television is the studio. In addition to premiering on MGM+ in the U.S., the series will be available to MGM+ viewers in the U.K., Italy, Germany, Spain, Latin America, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg.

Sean Bean to play Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood TV series
Quote
Sean Bean has been cast as the Sheriff of Nottingham in an upcoming Robin Hood TV series for MGM+.
According to reports, the Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings star will play the famous antagonist previously played on screen by the likes of Robert Shaw, Alan Rickman and Matthew Macfadyen in a new modern take on the classic tale.

Of course, Bean has been a consistent presence on our screens – both small and big – these past few decades, with recent roles including Snowpiercer, Time, Shardlake and Marriage.

Interestingly, his casting comes just shortly after news emerged that another Robin Hood project has just started production – with Jodie Comer and Hugh Jackman both set to star in film The Death of Robin Hood, which is written and directed by A Quiet Place: Day One and Pig filmmaker Michael Sarnoski.

And that version of the story looks to be especially star-studded: Bill Skarsgard, Noah Jupe and Murray Bartlett are all confirmed for supporting roles.

From Sherwood to Serbia: MGM’s Robin Hood Set to Start Filming in February 2025, Boosting Local Development
Quote
December 4, 2024

The legendary tale of Robin Hood is being retold on an epic scale, with Lionsgate Television and MGM+ joining forces for a bold new drama series set to begin production in Serbia this February. Created by Jonathan English (Ironclad, The Ark) and John Glenn (SEAL Team, Eagle Eye), the 10-episode first season will reimagine the classic outlaw story with historical authenticity and psychological depth.

Serbia’s Gornji Milanovac and its surrounding regions, including the scenic village of Varnice, will serve as the main filming locations, with additional work at PFI Studios in Šimanovci. The production will run through July, with Varnice transformed into Sherwood Forest and hosting over 200 cast and crew. As part of its commitment to the local community, Balkanic Media, which is producing, will renovate the Varnice community center—a significant investment in the area.

‘Robin Hood’ brings a darker, grittier take on the classic legend
Quote
Robin Hood was one of the first adventure stories I ever heard as a kid. The whole “stealing from the rich to give to the poor” thing was basically legend. But if I’m being honest, my real love for the story started with “Robin Hood: Men in Tights,” Mel Brooks’ ridiculous and hilarious send-up of the classic tale. That movie had everything - slapstick humor, fourth-wall-breaking jokes, and Cary Elwes as the most effortlessly charming Robin Hood ever. Now, MGM+ is bringing a brand-new take on Robin Hood to the screen, and let’s just say it’s going to be a lot more grounded. Their upcoming series, called “Robin Hood,” promises historical authenticity, psychological depth, and a big focus on the relationship between Rob and Marian. Plus, with Sean Bean playing the Sheriff of Nottingham, you just know he’s going to bring some serious weight to the role. Here’s everything you need to know about the new “Robin Hood” series coming to MGM+.

What is ‘Robin Hood’ about?
“Robin Hood” is MGM+’s fresh take on the legendary outlaw, set to premiere later in 2025. Production was scheduled to begin in February at PFI Studios in Serbia. This version strips away the fairy-tale gloss and leans into a more grounded, historically rich retelling. The story kicks off after the Norman invasion of England, where Rob (played by Jack Patten), the son of a Saxon forester, finds himself at odds with the ruthless Norman rule. Meanwhile, Marian, the daughter of a powerful Norman lord, isn’t just a love interest - she’s a key player in the fight for justice, infiltrating the royal court to take down corruption from the inside. Together, they form a dangerous alliance, risking everything to challenge the system from both the shadows and the throne room.

At its core, “Robin Hood” is a story about resistance and rebellion, but it’s also a deeply personal journey for its characters. Rob isn’t just a charismatic thief leading a band of merry men - he’s a man shaped by war, loss, and the brutal reality of life under occupation. Marian, on the other hand, has to play a far more dangerous game, navigating the treacherous world of nobles and royals where one wrong move could mean death. While Rob takes the fight to the forests and villages, Marian moves through the castles and courts, using her influence to chip away at the system from within. Their relationship isn’t just about romance - it’s about survival, strategy, and the shared dream of a freer England.

Of course, no “Robin Hood” story is complete without the Sheriff of Nottingham, and this version has landed a heavyweight in Sean Bean. But instead of a mustache-twirling villain, this Sheriff is a complex figure - part strategist, part politician, and deeply entrenched in the kingdom’s power struggles. He’s not ruling with cruelty for the sake of it - he genuinely believes in law and order (as the Normans define it), and that puts him on a direct collision course with Rob. With power plays, political maneuvering, and high-stakes action, this new “Robin Hood” isn’t just about robbing the rich - it’s about reshaping a kingdom from the inside out.

What time will episodes of ‘Robin Hood’ come on MGM+?
There’s no official time slot yet for “Robin Hood” on MGM+, but we do know it’s set to premiere sometime in late 2025. Production started in February at PFI Studios in Serbia, so it’s still early days. MGM+ hasn’t announced a specific release schedule, but looking at their other original series, they tend to drop new episodes weekly - often on Sundays, like they did with “From.” That means we’ll probably see “Robin Hood” follow a similar pattern, with episodes rolling out once a week instead of all at once. But until MGM+ makes it official, we’re just guessing. When they do lock in a date and time, we’ll update with all the details so you know exactly when to tune in.
